Ganglion

Ganglia

A ganglion is a benign tumor that appears over a joint or tendon sheath. It looks like a soft sac that contains a sticky, clear, viscous fluid. Depending on the size of the cyst, it may appear hard or soft.

They were first described by Hippocrates, and they arise from any joint, but most often the wrist.

Ganglion cysts occur more frequently in women, and 70% occur between the ages of 20 and 40.

In 60% – 70% of cases, they appear on the back of the wrist, but they are also found in other parts of the body.

TREATMENT

In the past, the prevailing view was to break the bag by hitting it with a heavy book (usually the Bible, which was indeed the heaviest book available). From this fact came the name “Bible cyst”.

The treatment is surgical, and consists of total removal of the ganglion.

An absolute indication for removal, according to our clinical experience, exists when this cystic tumor causes pain, interferes with function, or causes pressure on adjacent nerves.
