This is arthritis of the carpometacarpal joint, which forms between the base of the 1st metacarpal and the polygon major – one of the bones of the wrist.
Arthritis of the base joint causes unbearable pain, swelling, and reduced movement and strength. It prevents even simple everyday tasks, such as opening a jar or turning a doorknob.
In cases of incipient arthritis with mild symptoms, treatment is basically conservative and includes treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs, immobilization with special splints, and patient education on ways to reduce symptoms and protect the joint.
Surgical treatment includes:
- Subtraction of the major polygon
- Arthroplasty
